OK, the title is tongue-in-cheek.

Of course, a SARS is an important and necessary part of qualifying to be a Psychosexual Therapist. It ensures that we are open-minded about sex and comfortable with the wide range of sexual possibilities that we might be presented with clinically.

However, can we be too comfortable? Most of our clients are not extreme in their sexual expression, in fact quite the opposite. Most clients’ experience of sex is tame rather than shocking, they are limited rather than expansive. We need to meet them where they are at in their discomfort around sex, their struggles with shame, guilt, fear, inadequacy, trauma and confusion.

So, if we come into session all gung-ho with talk of permissions and rights and detailed information, we may inadvertently be damaging the therapeutic relationship, and possibly even risk traumatising our clients.

In this presentation Jacqueline will delve into her over 10,000 hours of clinical experience (and another two thousand or so of workshops and retreats) plus mentoring and supervising to explore how we can meet our clients where they are at and how we can gently help them get to where they want to be.

We’ll be covering language, metaphor, presence, connection, and other elements of the psychosexual therapeutic alliance.

Bring an open mind and all your questions!
